KPS Team Support Mencap

May 23 2017 12:49:00

Former Armagh GAA football player Aaron Kernan recently raised £755 for learning disability charity Mencap following his relay team’s participation in the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon.

Aaron, who is a Mencap Celebrity Ambassador, assembled the ‘Raonithe Cuig’ relay team which included himself, Ross Kernan, Tony Kernan, Michael McEntegart and Micheal Traynor.

The five travelled to Belfast for the race on May Day.

Following the event, Aaron Kernan said: “When I was asked to support Mencap in an ambassador role, I wanted to do more than pose for photos and voice my support. Pulling together a relay team was my way of showing my support for the charity.

“With 33,000 people in Northern Ireland with a learning disability, there are very few of us who do not know someone who will benefit from the funds raised for Mencap. My team and I truly enjoyed running in the marathon and it is rewarding to know the money we raised is going to an incredible charity.”

Margaret Kelly, Director, Mencap Northern Ireland added: “We would like to thank Aaron Kernan and his relay team for taking part in the marathon in aid of Mencap.

"We know running 26.2 miles, even in a relay, is a big commitment so we appreciate everyone for making the time to both run and fundraise.

“We are still awaiting the final total raised from the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon but Aaron and his teammates were among more than 1,000 runners who took part on Marathon Day in aid of Mencap.

"Money raised from the event will go to a number of initiatives including our upcoming family support service, a first for our charity. The exciting new programme will offer bespoke guidance to families with a child diagnosed with a learning disability.

“For anyone looking to #StepUp4Mencap like Aaron, our next big event is the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Half Marathon in September for which we are the official charity partner. We look forward to seeing more Mencap runners at the race and we are confident Aaron’s participation in this year’s marathon will encourage others to support children and young people with a learning disability across Northern Ireland in the future.”
