According to a poll of private renters the number of people living in private rented accommodation during their retirement has risen by more than 200,000 in the last four years. This represents a 13% increase since 2012. Worryingly though, the proportion of landlords that have let to retired renters has almost halved during the same timeframe. The research from the National Landlords’ Association suggests that it could become more difficult for those approaching retirement age to find suitable rented accommodation, particularly in high demand areas. An NLA spokeswoman commented that with successive cuts to the welfare budget and the likely impact of the government’s tax changes, it is unlikely that landlords will be able to provide homes in high cost areas for anyone without a well-paying job.
